    Many orbiter based activities need equipment to hold a payload steady while it is being worked on. This work may be construction, updating, repair, services, check out, or refueling operations in preparation for return to Earth. The Handling and Positioning Aid (HPA) is intended for use as general purpose equipment. The HPA provides a wide choice of work station positions, both immediately above the orbiter cargo bay and beyond. It can act in a primary docking role and, if required, can assist actively in the berthing process. From an analysis of ten reference missions, it was determined that two types of HPA mobility are needed; a tilt table, which simply swings out of the cargo bay, pivoting about an athwartships y axis, and an articulated arm.     Magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) accelerator assisted synthesis of diamond

    The use of a magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) accelerator for diamond synthesis is investigated. The acceleration process in an MPD device is reviewed and results presented for a test in which a low power (15 kW) MPD accelerator was used as the gas activation source for diamond deposition. A hydrogen–argon mixture was used in the discharge with externally injected methane as the carbon precursor. Results, including SEM images, Raman and x-ray diffraction spectra are presented for a 3.3 µm thick film deposited over a 100 min period. The Raman spectra include a broad background and shift in the diamond peak, indicative of contamination and stresses in the deposited film. Potential scaling benefits of the MPD accelerator as well as some of the drawbacks associated with methane injection and sample contamination underscored by the experiments are identified and discussed

    The planning, implementation and operations that took place to enable the Usuda, Japan, Deep Space Center to support the International Cometary Explorer (ICE) mission are summarized. The results show that even on very short notification our two countries can provide mutual support to help ensure mission success. The data recovery at the Usuda Deep Space Center contributed significantly to providing the required continuity of the experimental data stream at the encounter of the Comet Giacobini-Zinner

    Nanostructure determination from the pair distribution function: A parametric study of the INVERT approach

    We present a detailed study of the mechanism by which the INVERT method [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 125501] guides structure refinement of disordered materials. We present a number of different possible implementations of the central algorithm and explore the question of algorithm weighting. Our analysis includes quantification of the relative contributions of variance and fit-to-data terms during structure refinement, which leads us to study the roles of density fluctuations and configurational jamming in the RMC fitting process.     Temperature dependence of species concentrations near the substrate during diamond chemical vapor deposition

    Measurements have been made of the temperature dependence of CH3, CH4, and C2H2 very near the substrate during filament-assisted diamond growth. CH3 was detected using (2+1) resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI), and CH4 and C2H2 concentrations were measured using sampling mass spectrometry. A strong dependence of the CH3 REMPI signal on substrate temperature was observed, which at low temperatures may be characterized as having an activation energy of approximately 4±1 kcal/mole. Methane and acetylene, on the other hand, are relatively independent of substrate temperature. These results are most likely due to recombination of methyl to methane or ethane in the cool gas layer near the substrate or on the surface at low substrate temperatures
